Rainbows

In defeat my hopes are deadened
As my ev'ry dream is falling;
With each step my feet feel leadened,
And I hear the angel's calling.

There's a rainbow in the morning;
I have trod it's path undaunted.
Yes, a hundred times unscorning,
Going after what I've wanted;
For I knew it's charm would guide me
To rewards it keeps on owing.
But these things have been denied me,]
And the pain is ever growing.

In painful truth I now know this:
There's no time for more pretending;
For the ending of the road is
Far beyond the rainbow's ending.
