Beyond What Star?
Like an ameba, tiny and free,
Life was born within the sea; Dividing to grow, as life must still; Fishes and flowers and trees on the hill; Animals and birds and man, they say; Come to here; and beyond this day? Through endless space, the atom grew; Hydrogen fused on and on, Combining to form the things we've found; Air and water and rocks upon the ground; Soil and gems and fuel to fly, Men in rockets, past the sky. From what minute beginning came the mind? In what scale, this answer, do we find? Where, in all the worlds, can that be, Where sparked the thoughts that come to me? Beyond what star, beneath what sea, Or grown from the heart of what deity? - Edna Huber (1971) |
