Augie

My Augie is a watchful dog
The best there's ever been
She tells me that there's someone here
Although I've let them in.

She always lets me know just when
The neighbors have come in
And just as clearly lets me know
When they go out again

She must herald the mail each day
For greatness she has strived
She'll never miss a chance to say
The paper has arrived

She looks out through the window pane;
And listens at the door;
She keeps one mindful ear alert
While curled upon the floor

She scouts the yard, from time to time,
Assuring all is clear;
Sometimes she checks beneath the plants
To calm a nagging fear.

She guards with noble faultlessness
And she proclaims with pride.
But If you dare to challenge her,
She'll run away and hide.
